Vincent Logan Nominated as Special Trustee for American Indians

On September 21 President Barack Obama nominated Vincent G. Logan, Osage Nation, as the next Special Trustee for American Indians, a move that Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar approved of according to a Department of the Interior press release.

“Vincent Logan has been a part of the fabric of Indian country for many years as an investment professional, mentor for Native American attorneys and founding member of the Native American Bar Association of Washington, D.C.,” Secretary Salazar said in the release. “His asset management expertise, legal experience and extensive network of professional relationships in Indian Country will well serve the Office of Special Trustee as we work to build a stronger and more responsive trust asset management system for the Nation’s First Americans.”

The Office of Special Trustee focuses on improving the accountability and management of Indian funds that are held in trust by the federal government. This includes being the primary fiduciary responsibility to manage about $3.7 billion in tribal trust funds and Individual Indian Money accounts, and leases for developing natural resources (coal, oil, natural gas, timber, grazing) according to the release.

Logan is the owner of The Nations Group, LLC, working on asset management, investment strategies, and financial education with American Indian tribes. He has worked in private banking with Merrill Lynch’ was a corporate attorney, and formerly worked in the antitrust division at the U.S. Department of Justice.

The position of Special Trustee requires Senate confirmation.
