Washington State Bill Could Dismantle State Jurisdiction Over American Indian Tribes

According to the Associated Press, a bill, HB 2233, was recently passed by the Washington state Senate by a vote of 42-6. The bill appears to dismantle state jurisdiction over American Indian tribes.

The state assumed jurisdiction in 1963 in matters along the lines of juvenile delinquency, truancy, mental illness and adoption proceedings. With this bill a tribe can ask the state to return jurisdiction over criminal and civil matters to the tribes.
