Yahoo! Sports had a nice write up yesterday about 21-year old Mary Killman, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation member who’s hoping to nab a gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Killman’s mastery of symmetry in the water is matched by the symmetry of the moment she finds herself in—following her idol, Jim Thorpe, into the Olympics exactly 100-years after his legendary 1912 performance in Stockholm.

Here’s a video of Killman performing at the World Championships in Shanghai in the solo event:

Killman is also, like Thorpe, a native of Oklahoma. She has been involved in synchronized swimming since the age of 11. To honor her heritage, Yahoo! Sports points out that Killman wears the initials CPN on her swimsuit.

Synchronized swimming has only been an official Olympic sport since the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles (it started as a non-competitive exhibition in the 1952 Summer Games in Helsinki.) The sport demands overall body strength, requiring participants to spend ten hours a day swimming and weight training, six days a week.

We’re all rooting for Killman (you could say we’ve synchronized our support of her), who, regardless of the medal outcome, has already inspired many in Indian Country.
