Whitewater-Baldy Fire Passes 100,000 Acres

On Saturday, the massive Whitewater-Baldy fire burning in Gila National Forest in New Mexico had torched 100,000 acres, or more than 150 square miles, according to an Associated Press report.

According to the latest data from InciWeb, the fire now covers 82,000 acres, but, as the AP explained, it has shrunk of its own accord and was 0 percent contained. Firefighters have not been able to fight the blaze due to extreme weather conditions. The fire is believed to have been started by lightning, and a smoke advisory is in effect. Residents in cities as far away as Albuquerque have been advised to limit their outdoor activities.

Whitewater-Baldy is one of several fires currently burning across the country. On Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Duck Lake Fire had burned over 21,000 acres on Saturday.

Numerous fires are also burning in Arizona, with both Gladiator and Sunflower having surpassed 16,000 acres.

According to a Reuters report, wildfires are also burning in Colorado, Nevada and Utah; altogether, the active fires have charred a total of more than 200 square miles across the country.
