Yankees’ Joba Chamberlain Dislocates Ankle Playing With Son (UPDATE)

New York Yankees relief pitcher Joba Chamberlain, Winnebago, dislocated his right ankle playing on a trampoline playing with his 5-year-old son, Karter, reported USA Today.

For Chamberlain, who we profiled last year, this is the latest in a string of setbacks that he’s suffered since bursting onto the scene in 2007 with a 95-mph fastball and devastating slider. He’s been shuttled back and forth by the Yankees between the starting rotation and bullpen, been arrested for a DUI that was widely distributed online (though he’s never had any problems with the law before or since) and undergone elbow surgery from which he wasn’t expected back until July.

The ankle injury, which Yankees GM Brian Cashman described as “massive,” places serious doubt on any return for Chamberlain in 2012.

UPDATE: The New York Daily News reports that Chamberlain lost a “life-threatening amount of blood” and that “there initially was concern for his life.”
