Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation Donates $300,000 to Planned Unity, Tolerance Center

The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation has donated $300,000 to a planned center for unity and tolerance in Sacramento, California, reported The Sacramento Bee.

The nonprofit Capital Unity Center is championed by Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg. As the former president of what was once known as the Capital Unity Council, Steinberg reportedly solicited the money from the tribe.

The nonprofit behind the center seeks to build the “gathering place and an interactive learning experience” to promote diversity, tolerance and inclusion, according to tax documents submitted by the nonprofit.

The tribe’s chairman Marshall McKay said in a statement that the tribe is supporting the project because it believes “as a society and a people, we all benefit from a culture of openness and tolerance.”
