Community Day at the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian

The Mitchell Museum of the American Indian will host "Community Day" Saturday, April 27, with special family events planned.

The Mitchell’s Community Day programs, free with regular museum admission, include a “dream catcher” Kids Craft workshop from 11 a.m. to noon, food and light refreshments from noon to 1 p.m., live music from 1 to 2 p.m., and a story time for youngsters in the museum’s teaching lodge from 2-2:30 p.m. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., its regular Saturday hours.

Visitors will have the opportunity to view the museum’s major new temporary exhibit, “Another View of American Indian Fine Art,” which opened March 16 and spans most of the museum’s second floor.

Although it’s not specifically a children’s exhibit, young visitors might be intrigued by many of the pieces on display, including imaginative and whimsical limited-edition prints by Native artists of arctic Canada. At an artists station in the exhibit, youngsters and adults can create their own drawings to hang in the gallery or take home.

Another section of the exhibit challenges visitors to guess which paintings are by Native American artists and which are by non-Natives who paint Native subjects.

The museum’s day of special events coincides with Evanston’s Central Street Business Association’s Community Day, when participating merchants donate a portion of their sales proceeds to designated local nonprofit organizations, including the Mitchell Museum.

The independent nonprofit Mitchell Museum is located at 3001 Central St., Evanston, Illinois. For information, phone 847-475-1030 or e-mail visitor.services@mitchellmuseum.org
